Pextons - a fine local shop!
I'm lucky to live near a good parade of local shops, just a few minutes walk from my house. Last night they were a real God send. It was nearly 5pm, snowing thick and fast, and I suddenly remembered I needed to make a tray bake for my youngest son to take to school the next day. I had a recipe handy for carrot and orange cake, but no carrots and no suitable cake tin! So I put on my boots and coat, and went to get what I needed at the shops.
The photos are of Pextons on Bishopthorpe Road, a hardware store selling all sorts of useful things for the home - including a cake tin in just the size I needed for my recipe.

I bought my gingerbread man cutter (an essential kitchen accessory, I'm sure you'll agree) in there one wet Wednesday afternoon a few years ago when I happened to be in York fixing a busted ATM.
Superb shop - a real treasure trove of stuff.
What an excellent shop. I love places like that.
cela me fait penser à ces magasin de village, où on trouve tout.
I just love those shops too!
We have a place like that just round the corner, it's brilliant.
On other brilliant York we-sell-everything emporia, we bought both our Christmas tree and one of our corkscrews from Barnitts. What a great shop that is!
Wow what a great find. That looks like my kind of shop :-D x
If they sell seeds as well Ruby you could plan for a furture carrot cake and buy a packet of carrot seeds;-))
Love the photo and the shop. Your carrot and orange cake sounds good, how about posting the recipe?
I'm glad to see these wonderful independents are still surviving in these chainshop only high streets. We have a local greengrocer which has been going 100 years. I always get most of our fish, fruit and veg from them, rather than a supermarket.
Love Barnitts in town, but this store looks pretty well equipped as well! Orange & carrot cake is my favourite, so I'd like the recipe too, please. Have a nice weekend. Ciao. A.
Stores like that are so fun to ramble around. We have one here called Peppercorn. And the orange/carrot cake sounds yummy!
For local people?
I'd like a local store like this one. Very handy
Hi Ruby, Did you get lost in the shop? Hope you're well. Ciao. A.
Bury St Edmunds would like Ruby back, please can the people of York be really mean to her; then maybe she'll come back.
It is a very fine shop - but have you got lost in it? Are you still trying to fight your way out of the saucepan aisle?
Oh Ruby, how we miss you... again!
Hope all is well with you & yours
Where are you Ruby? I so miss your daily blog. Hope you are having fun whatever you are doing! Cheers. Linda
Ruby, where are you? Hugs.
Lucky You!
Ususally, they tell you the morning that they need the bakes!
Ruby, where are you?
More photos!
Is that snow in the top pic? Feb doesn't seem all that long ago, yet snow seems an unusual sight... prob as it is so sunny outside now, how time flies!
Hi Ruby, pleased to meet you! We aren't far from you...just outside Whitby on the North York Moors. We often head over to York on the motorbike and alays find a parking space just outside the minster. We were there a couple of weeks ago. Turns out to be Normandy Veterans Service in the minster. Very touching!
Why did you stop posting? Your blog is one of the best.
(Sintra, glorious eden)
Hi Ruby - I've been reading your blogs for years - started with you in Bury.
Still come back every once in a while to check and see if you've 'come back'.
Your blogging was inspiring and talented, and we miss you !
Hope you're ok !
