Stations

Later today, the kids and I will be boarding a train to take us back to York. Above is a photo of our destination: York Station. Wayne commented a while back that York Station has lots of atmosphere, and I would agree with that. It's quite a big, sprawling station, and we are well connected in York to all other places. We also have the National Railway Museum in the City which I shall photograph sometime soon. That's the Yorkshire Wheel in the background by the way, a bit like the London Eye on a smaller scale. Panoramic views over the city from there!

Our departure point will be Bury St Edmunds Station, shown above. A bit of a grim station, with no shops on the platform and trains are often missed out. There isn't even anywhere nearby you can go for a coffee - the nearest place is Tesco cafe, not good. It's a shame, because the station is a beautiful huge Victorian building and it has loads of potential. This area of Bury is currently being redeveloped so maybe things will change.

Ruby is in Bury St Edmunds for the week, where she formerly lived and blogged. This post is part of a series to run until her return to York, comparing the two towns.

It's beautiful Ruby. Do the kids enjoy riding the train? My kids would love that. They've only been on trains inside amusement parks, not one that actually takes us to a destination. Always been one of those things I've wanted to do :)
Enjoy your trip home!

I agree with you about the Bury St Edmunds Station — it's a beautiful building. A small, old-style cafĂ© would be great there (nothing too modern please!).

Have a safe trip back home!

Shame you didn't make it to the Weeping Willow last night and now you're off back to sunny Yorkshire. Well it was sunny all day yesterday as we returned to the monstrous rain in Bury St Edmunds.
And, incidentally, I heard on the local news up Norf that the Yorkshire Wheel will be closed & dismantled soon - luckily my mum took Sasha on it in the Summer but looks like I've missed my chance :(
Have a safe journey home and hope to catch you next time

Hi Ruby, Glad you'll be back in Yorkshire soon. It was the Yorkshire Wheel last day today. Last ticket sold at 5.30pm. All closed at 6pm. It will be soon dismantled and apparently shipped abroad. Pity as it looks cool behind York Station. Have a nice journey back. Ciao. Antonella

Yipee! We're going to the NRM. An amazing place.

I'm probably alone in my view that the sooner this penchant cities have for erecting mutant ferris wheels passes the better. Talk about a blot on the landscape.

Sorry to have missed you. Swimming was cancelled in the end as 'someone' put too much chlorine in the pool, but we had emergency visit to vets with a very poorly Basil instead.
Safe journey 'home' x
