Tesco in York is very big. It takes me ages to get round it. Rows and rows and rows of stuff. It's in fact a bit too big for my liking but sometimes I go there anyway because I know I'm going to find everything I want in the same store. Eventually. Have you noticed lately that when brand names are pluralised - such as Shoot in that sign in the top right - it seems to be becoming more and more acceptable to use greengrocer's apostrophe (an appostrophe where it shouldn't be, as in "apple's 70p a pound."
Shoot's £1. State of that. I think I'll go and find the manager and say "Hello, my name is Shoot, can I have my £1, please?"

Perhaps they are trying to claim that the 70P belongs to the apple. [Could happen.]

What maddens me is not that they get it so wrong as that they KNOW they've got it wrong and don't CARE.

I detest Tesco & refuse to step foot in any of the stores. They are killing the traditional high street. The fact that you can get everything there means that no one goes and visits any of the other shops. Plus of course they only pay a pittance for the food from farmers.

Mandy - I think Shoots are kids' drinks called Fruit Shoots (not Fruit Shoot's).
Gail's Man - you do better than me then. Although I try to shop locally and at the market most of the time (with my fine ladybird shopping trolley!) I do sometimes give in and do the supermarket thing.
This is his hilarious, Ruby. And as a foreigner I sometimes think that it's my fault and the supermarket language is correct! I do not like big supermarket either but although I try to support local shops, unfortunately the prices are much too high there and I cannot afford local shops all the time. The farmer shop near where I live is very expensive and the quality not always up to the same standards as Tesco, etc! Once I've even found a living slug in my salad (I was eating in their cafe) and that means that it isn't even very clean! All the best. Ciao. A.

I was going to add that it irritates me when people add an S on to the end of Tesco when the shop name clearly does not have an S when I noticed grumpyoldwoman has called it Tescos. At the risk of getting my head bitten off by a "grumpyoldwoman"; why do people do that, I think Imust have been off sick the day that was explained at school;-))

Two things I hate in your post today - Tesco and the random apostrophe! I was out having a drink (or two (or three!)) witha friend and we got on to the apostrophe and had a great rant about it. I think people responsible for this should write out lines - I must not use apostrphes in error - 100 times!
If in doubt don't use it. Thats my motto :)
Jolly Green P - yes, Grumpyoldwoman isn't actually grumpy (or even old) so fear not. A local councillor on my last blog in Bury St Edmunds used to have arguments with me about Tesco v Tescos. I was for "Tescos" in those days. Although he did actually win me with his argument for Tesco, I never formally admitted it. I wonder if he ever looks over here and will see this. Probably not!!
Arrrggghh two of my pet hates. Tesco and the apostrophes. Don't you think the stores are starting to look a bit downmarket too, with their odd little signs. :-D
